Ranil calls for peaceful polls

Opposition United National (UNP) Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe today appealed for a calm and peaceful local council election today.

He was speaking at a ceremony to present a cash donation to a UNP supporter Tuan Hilurdeen whose house was attacked by come goons during the run-up to the local council elections.

Mr. Wickremesinghe said the values which the Sri Lankan society had maintained throughout history should be upheld during this election.

He said these values had been badly dented in the recent past with innocent people being killed and doctors being assaulted on the road.

“Those who create violence are ones who fear defeat at today’s elections,” Mr. Wickremesinghe said and urged the people not to hesitate to exercise their right of franchise. (Yohan Perera)
