Leader of Opposition Ranil Wickremesinghe today found fault with the government for welcoming the setting up of UNHRC in 2006, agreeing to empower it to investigate human right violations and the undertakings it had taken with regard to safeguarding human rights in the country.

Mr. Wickremesinghe who addressed a group of party activists at the party headquarters Sirikotha, said the government had put the country in a precarious situation at the UNHRC Sessions this year by agreeing to the resolution with regard to institution building of UNHRC in June 2007, and to the resolution 60/25 of March 15, 2006, acknowledging the role that is to be played by NGOs in promoting and protecting human rights.

He said the government had further acknowledged the powers of UN to solve international problems of an economic, social, cultural or humanitarian character and promoting human rights, without discretion of race, sex, language or religion.
 

 

Mr. Wickremesinghe recalled that he had declined to sign an agreement on International Court during his tenure as Prime Minister, thus preventing the Sri Lankan leaders from being charged of war crimes. “I created a favourable situation for Sri Lanka in 2003, but the present regime had turned the table,” he said.
