Ranil asks for concrete measures to ease tension

Main Opposition UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe alleged the government was not taking concrete action to diffuse rising tensions between religious groups in the country.

The UNP leader speaking at a press conference today said the suggestion of the take over of the Halal certification process was not satisfactory, and there was much to be done in order to ease prevailing tensions

“Government should have take actions to stop the difficulties that Muslim people are facing. Even before the Halal issue came up, there were few incidents that took place in several areas against the Islamic people. Government did not take proper actions against these, they kept denying those incidents and said nothing has happened,” he said.

Speaking at the press briefing Mayor of Colombo A.J.M Muzammil said that the Halal certification is only a purification system for food and it neither changes anyone’s religion nor breaches any. (Yohan Perera and Lahiru Pothmulla)
