United National Party (UNP) and Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe yesterday stressed the need for sharia law to instill discipline in the rank and file of the party.

“We will have to deal with those who sabotage the current UNP membership drive in the way that the Muslims deal with those who disobey the teachings of Islam,” he said addressing a meeting in Galewala last evening.

He said that everyone in the party should work together to defeat the common enemy which was the present government.

Mr. Wickremesinghe said those who did not participate in the party’s membership drive in the Central Province would be severally dealt with. He said he had instructed UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake to appoint a committee to take action against those who did not participate in the drive.

He said ten percent of the party members had kept away from the party’s reorganising programme in Kandy and Dambulla.

Central Provincial Council member Sanjeewa Kaviratne has been appointed as one of the organisers for Dambulla. An additional organiser is to be appointed for the area in the near future. (Yohan Perera)
