Rains in catchment areas insufficient for reservoirs

Although the catchment areas have received a significant amount of rain, it has not been sufficient to have an impact on the reservoirs, CEB Deputy General Manager Senajith Dassanayaka said.

He said the decline in the water levels had resulted in a noticeable drop in hydropower generation while thermal power generation had increased to meet the shortfall.

As of yesterday hydropower generation had amounted to 16 per cent of our electricity requirement while 84 per cent was from thermal power generation and a minute 0.3 per cent from wind power.

At present, the water level at Castlereagh is only 9.4 per cent of its capacity, Mausakelle 16.6 per cent, Victoria 22.7 per cent, Randenigala 60.8 per cent and Samanala Weva 28.1 per cent. (Chaturanga Pradeep)
