Railway unions to meet govt. officials

Railway unions who called off a planned countrywide 48-hour strike that was to commence yesterday would meet government officials tomorrow to address their grievances and receive their demands.
Station masters, train guards, engineers, foremen and railway controllers who were resolved to stop work called off a planned strike after Presidential Secretary Lalith Weeratunge assured railway trade unions that their demands would be met.
Railway Employees Trade Union Alliance said yesterday that Weeratunge had assured the unions that their grievances would be addressed in 24 hours and urged them to refrain from going on strike.
Railway unions would meet with Weeratunge, Transport Minister Kumara Welgama, officials of the Salary Carder Commission and the Treasury to discuss their salary anomalies which had not been rectified since January.
“We are confident that they would meet out demands. But we are still uncertain on what basis that it would be done. In the event they fail to do so we will be forced to stop work and call for a strike again,” Railway Employees Trade Union Alliance Spokesman Janaka Fernando said.
