Contractors restoring the northern railway from Omanthai to Jaffna have found that ballast and earth in the railway line had been removed by the LTTE to build bunkers and other buildings when the area was under their control.

The restoration of the railway line to a distance of about 136 miles from Omanthai to Jaffna has been undertaken by an Indian construction company. An official of the company said they have been compelled to procure a large quantity of earth and ballast to fill the track that had been dug up to a depth of about 15 feet. He said the restoration would be completed in about two years. (Romesh Madusanka)
