Punjab governor in trouble

A lawyer has sought from the Lahore High Court (LHC) disqualification of Punjab Governor Salman Taseer for secretly visiting Sri Lanka without informing the government, allowing it to appoint its stopgap successor.

Noushab Khan, advocate, has filed a petition in the LHC and argued that the governor was constitutionally bound to appoint his successor in his absence but he failed to do so and the office remained vacant for three days.

On Dec.5, Taseer mysteriously disappeared from Pakistan. His absence was noticed by the Punjab Assembly three days later when a member raised the issue.

Later it came to the light that Taseer emerged at the Jinnah International Airport Karachi on a flight from Colombo. The governor, who speaks on almost every issue freely, has preferred no talk about his absence from Pakistan.
