Protests banned in Jaffna

The Jaffna court yesterday issued an order banning any demonstrations in Jaffna after a group of people resorted to violence during a protest outside the Jaffna court premises recently, police said.

The order was issued to Janatha Balaya Organisation, Jaffna Women’s organization and Northern Provincial Councillor Anandi Shashidharan.

Around 130 suspects were remanded on charges of unlawful assembly and stoning the Jaffna Courts Complex on Thursday.

The protesters who had gathered in the vicinity of the Court premises turned restive when there was a delay in producing the Swiss national who was alleged to have raped and killed an 18-year-old girl at Punguditivu in Jaffna.
