A tense situation prevailed at the Jaffna Court premises this morning when some protestors stoned the Court building and the police over an incident where an 18-year-old girl was raped and killed at Punguditivu in Jaffna.

The protesters stoned the court for not handing over the suspects to them and urged the authorities to hand over the suspects.

Police fired tear gas to disperse the angry protestors. One policeman was reportedly injured in the attack, which took place while the case was being heard in Court.

Three suspects were arrested last Friday in connection with the rape and killing of the teenager, whose body with the hands and feet tied, was found with cut injuries on an abandoned block of land near the school.

The body was found by the Police during an investigation carried out on a complaint made by the girl’s parents to the Kayts Police that their daughter had not returned home from school.

She was last seen going to school on Wednesday (13) morning. The students and teachers of the school staged a protest over the incident. (Chaturanga Pradeep)
