The producers and distributors of milk products and supplements that contain whey protein had been instructed to remove their stocks from shelves until further notice, Director General of Health Dr. P. G. Mahipala said today.

Issuing a statement, the director had instructed all the Medical Officers of Health (MOH) and Public Health Inspectors (PHI) to search shops for milk products that had whey protein.

With the support of the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) Chief Medical Officer Pradeep Kariyawasam, a team of 50 PHIs conducted raids today in Colombo to trace milk products which contained whey protein and/or DCD.

Ministry Media Spokesman D. Wanninayake said that there were still milk products that contained whey protein in shops.

“We issued a statement to producers to remove milk products that contain whey protein and/or DCD last week. Today during our investigations we saw that the products that have DCD were out of the market but products which contained whey protein were still there,” he said.

“This is why the Director had issued a statement demanding the immediate removal of products that contain whey protein,” he said.

Mr. Wanninayake said that milk products such as cheese, milk toffees, chocolates and biscuits which has whey protein as ingredient should also be removed from the market. (Lahiru Pothmulla)
