Probe on fraudster family

Investigations are underway to apprehend three members of the same family who were Directors of an educational institute that had defrauded more than 20 people for over Rs. 2 million in cash promising education and job opportunities abroad.

 

The trio, a father, son and daughter were directors of the “Elizabeth Institute of Higher studies (Pvt) Ltd” situated in Wellawatte. Two branches of the institute had been in operation in Wellawatte and Kurunegala.

 

The suspects, who had earlier sent people abroad, had later defrauded the unsuspecting victims. The suspects had drawn its customers by advertising the “Elizabeth Institute” in the print and electronic media promising educational opportunities in UK, Canada and several European countries. The son-in-law of the main suspect had also been remanded over his involvement as an employee of the institute.

 

Further, the rent for the building where the institute was situated had not been paid for several months and complaints has been made by the owner of the building for cheques worth 750,000 which had bounced back. 

 

Unit Two of the Fraud Investigations Bureau is conducting further investigations. (Daily Mirror online)
