Probe into attack on statues

The government is to launch s special investigation into the attack on several statues in the Batticaloa, including the statue of Mahatma Gandhi, the External Affairs Ministry said today.

"The Inspector General of Police has been instructed to carry out an immediate and thorough investigation into these incidents to identify motives and culprits behind these acts of vandalism," the Ministry said in a statement.

Statues of Mahatma Gandhi and the founder of the scout movement Robert Baden-Powell, Swamy Vipulananthar and the statue of Palavarmani Periyathambipillai, which stood in the center of Batticaloa town, have been found decapitated by some unknown group on Friday morning.

The heads of the statues have been completely mutilated by the gang.
