Prince William and Kate Middleton welcome baby girl

Kate Middleton, the Duchess of Cambridge, has given birth to a girl, just two hours after she was admitted to hospital for the delivery of her second royal baby.

At about 6am she was transferred to the Lindo Wing of St Mary's Hospital in West London. Prince William travelled with his wife to the hospital, where the couple's first royal baby was born in 2013.

Soon after 11am, it was announced that the the duchess had given birth to a girl. The new princess will be fourth in line to the throne, behind Prince Charles, Prince William and its older brother, Prince George. Prince Harry will drop down one place in the line of succession.

The traditional announcement outside Buckingham Palace was accompanied by tweets from official royal accounts.

The baby weighs 8 pounds and 3 ounces.  Both mother and child are doing well, the Palace said. (Theweek)
