President pardons man who attempted to assassinate him

President Maithripala Sirisena met the former LTTE cadre, convicted on charges of attempting to assassinate him in 2006 and granted the convict a presidential pardon during the national celebration at the BMICH to mark the President’s first year in office.

Convict Sivaraja Jenivan alias Senan, walked up to the President during the celebrations to accept the presidential pardon.

Jenivan was arrested in 2006, while on his way to assassinate President Sirisena, who was the then Minister of Mahaweli Development.

The convict was sentenced to 10 years rigorous imprisonment by the Polonnaruwa High Court on July 3, 2015.
