An advanced level student was killed and two others including a pregnant lady were injured when a high tension electricity cable fell on their house in Puttalam late this evening.

According to the Puttalam police the victim, a student of Zahira Collage in Puttalam, was visiting his friend and wife at the time the accident occurred.

The pregnant lady is said to be in critical condition and is receiving treatment at the Puttalam general hospital together with her husband. Meanwhile the Puttalam coroner, Nandana Wimalaweera, who visited the site of the incident, said that investigations revealed a television antenna at the house has fallen on the electricity cable resulting in the cable snapping and falling on top of the house.

He added that the cable was fixed on a temporary PVC pipe instead of the concrete post and that resulted in the cable collapsing on the house after the antenna fell on top of it.

The Puttalam coroner also noted that CEB engineers in the area had fixed the cable back in place even before investigations into the incident could begin and a report on this will be handed over to the Court. (Daily Mirror online)
