The Prisons Department is awaiting a response from the Treasury prior to advertising for the two vacancies for hangmen.

“It will take some time to fill the vacancies as we first need Treasury permission to do so. We have written to the Treasury about two week ago, and are awaiting their response,” Prisons Commissioner-General P.W. Kodippili said today.
The Prisons Department has vacancies for two hangmen for Welikada and Bogambara prisons after the previous hangmen were promoted to other posts.

The name hangman is to be re-designated, and prisons would be renamed as rehabilitation centres. The death penalty has not been carried out since 1976. (Ayesha Zuhair)
