Postal Trade Union asks to remove Postmaster General immediately

The Joint Postal Trade Union today carried out a sathyagraha at the Postal Headquarters calling on President Mahinda Rajapaksa to remove the Postmaster General form his post with immediate effect failing which they would go on strike.

Postal workers went on strike in November last year for eight consecutive days due to the government’s failure to remove Postmaster General M.K.B. Dissanayake. “The Postal Department incurred a severe loss of Rs.30 lakhs during its last strike and is likely to suffer once again as we will take trade union action if the Post Master General is not removed,” the union’s Convener Chinthaka Bandara said.

He said Dissanayake had abused department resources, misused state funds and had performed duties that override his position.

He said there was a charge sheet issued against the Postmaster General following an investigation by a committee to inquire into allegations made against him.

“According to the committee there were 21 allegations against him but nothing has still been done. If he has done wrong, then he should be removed. We have not requested for salary increments or benefits, we only want the Postmaster General removed,” he said.

The union handed a letter to the Presidents office today and will wait for a response until further notice, he said. (Olindhi Jayasundere)
