Criminal activities such as the killings at Kotakethana in Kahawatta and the incident where a container carrying 261 kg of heroin was detected by Customs are known to be backed by politicians, the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) alleged today.

“A mother and a daughter were killed at Kotakethana in a case involving the peddling of heroin. But Minister John Seneviratne’s Coordinating Secretary who is alleged to have been engaged in peddling heroin sin the area, has been released,” JVP MP Vijitha Herath told a news conference today.

He said the Prime Minister, who is the Second Citizen of the country and the Minister of Buddha Sasana and Religious Affairs is accused in the heroin container muddle.

“The Prime Minister has publically admitted to have had dined with a heroin smuggler who is behind the container found with heroin. He should resign if he has any connection to the incident and apologise to the nation,” Mr. Herath said.

He said the wrongdoers under the protection of politicians have the privilege of getting away without facing the law.

“Some condemned prisoners have even been granted a presidential pardon because of political influence. Even Minister S.B. Dissanayake is today challenging Court decisions by taking action to release his supporters from prison,” Mr. Herath said.  (Sanath Desmond and Lahiru Pothmulla)
