The police are unable to remove all the political posters, cut outs and banners before the General Elections as there are well over 7000 candidates who have decorated the roads with campaign materials, the IGP said today.

Speaking to journalists, IGP Mahinda Balasuriya said that the police had commenced washing off all political writings and paintings on the walls last week and had then  moved on to removing the banners and cut outs last night.

However with over 7000 candidates participating for the upcoming polls the IGP said that it was impossible to clean up the island from all the propaganda material as even during the Presidential Election the police had managed to remove only 20% with only 20 candidates participating.

He further said that the police had also taken measures to shut down nine illegal offices of the candidates.

Elections Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayaka had directed IGP Balasuriya last week to confiscate buses displaying political banners and cut outs and remove all posters in the island by March 15.
