Police will impose fines of not less than Rs.3,000 and not more than Rs.5,000 on vehicles which produce high sounds with the use of subwoofers or audio sound systems and causing disturbance to the public with immediate effect.

A circular with regard to the new rule was distributed among police stations in the country by Police Headquarters last weekend.

Police spokesman Ajith Rohana said under the Motor Traffic Act the volume on the radio or any other sound given by sub woofers or speakers installed inside the car, should only be heard by the passengers and cannot exceed very high sound levels.

“If it is disturbing the public, then it is a clear violation of the law. The law is mentioned in the section 160 of the No 21 provision of the 1981 Act as well as No 8 provision of the 2009 Act,” he said. (Supun Dias)
