The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) appointed by the Inspector General of Police (IGP) N.K. Illangakone to investigate accusations such as extortion, mentioned in two petitions which were handed over by two parties representing Minister Mervyn Silva and Kelaniya PS Chairman Prasanna Ranaweera are still probing the accusations mentioned in the petitions.

The police are looking into many areas as the accusations levelled against each other by the two petitions are based on a number of sensitive topics.

Police media spokesman Ajith Rohana said that the SIU will hand over its report on the investigations based on the two petitions to IGP Illangakone as soon as possible.

A public row erupted between SLFP Kelaniya Organiser Minister Mervyn Silva and the Kelaniya PS Chairman recently when the PS Chairman and his group accused Minister Silva of extortion in the Kelaniya area and requested the President to appoint a commission to probe the actions of the controversial Minister.

In response the Minister had said that he had enough evidence to prove that the Chairman is involved for various types of illegal activities and he would reveal more information against several other members as well.

The SIU normally investigate allegations levelled at police officers. But the IGP can direct the unit to investigate any matter or allegation. (Supun Dias)
