Police seeks foreign assistance

The IGP said today that the police are in contact with foreign law enforcement authorities to investigate the recent drug bust in Kalpitiya as they had information to believe that the drugs had been brought in from overseas.

IGP Mahinda Balasuriya told journalists a short while ago that the drug bust in Kalpitiya was the largest drug haul in Sri Lankan history and said the name of the country which it had been brought in from would be divulged soon.

“We have evidence to prove that the drugs were brought form another country and we are currently working with foreign law agencies regarding the matter’. We will divulge the name of the country soon,” the IGP said.

The IGP added that the police would also divulge the name of the foreign agencies they were working with to the media after the investigations were complete.

The Kalpitiya police recently seized 40 kg of herion from Chilaw, the largest ever herion haul to be nabbed in Sri Lanka. The value of the heroin was an estimated Rs. 240 million.
