The opposition UNP and JVP say the police is there to maintain law and order in the country and have no right to create a special unit for the propose of protecting any individual and his or her family.

Former JVP MP Vijitha Herath, speaking to Daily Mirror online, said that the police is there to protect the people and maintain law and order in the country and cannot create a special unit to take action against anyone making allegations against President Mahinda Rajapaksa and his family.

Meanwhile former UNP MP Lakshman Seniviratna said that the move to create a special unit to protect the name of the President is undemocratic. Both the JVP and UNP said they will initiate action to strongly oppose the move by the police.
