Police jeep burnt in protest over deaths

A police jeep was set on fire by a group of angry villagers in the Dikkumbura area in Ahangama over the death of two men who were killed when army personnel opened fire after they allegedly disobeyed orders to stop their motorbike at an army checkpoint in Ahangama this evening.

Southern Province DIG Kingsly Ekanayake said that the angry crowd had also thrown stones at the policemen at the checkpoint.

He said that no policemen were injured and the situation is under control with security being tightened in the area. (Supun Dias)
