Police said the abduction of the two police constables on traffic duty at the Getinuwara Junction in Kurunegala and the killing of one of them was a challenge thrown by the miscreants at the Police Service.

Police Spokesman Ajith Rohana said the police had accepted the challenge and were ready to deal with them accordingly.

“Yes there was a lapse on the part of the policemen as they were unarmed at the time of the incident,” he said.

SSP Rohana said CID recorded 20 statements on the abduction of the two constables and the killing of PC Chandana Sampath. They were stripped naked and shot at by armed men in the Badagamuwa Forest on April 6.

The police department had offered a reward of Rs.1 million to any person who provided reliable information leading to the arrest of the suspects.

The motive for the abduction and the shooting is still not known.
