Following a surge in election violence, the police have beefed up security in areas that have been identified as ‘hotspots’ where both the government and the opposition have a strong presence, the police said today.

The police added that security has been stepped up in an attempt to avoid clashes between political parties and their supporters.

The police have deployed mobile road blocks, additional police patrols and an extra police force in areas that have been identified as most violent prone.

The Police Elections Desk has so far received 143 complaints related to election violence and 70 suspects have been arrested for violating the elections law, Head of the Police Elections Desk, Senior DIG Gamini Navaratne said. (SD)
