Pistol changes into sword in police report

When a case of criminal assault came up for hearing before Panadura Addl. Magistrate Manjula Karunaratne, it transpired that the entries in the police inquiry records had been altered. In the case the word “Pistholaya” (pistol) in the police entry is alleged to have been erased and replaced with “Kaduwa” (sword).

ASP Panadura Ranjith Silva is conducting an inquiry into the alleged irregularity.

The Chief Magistrate ordered police to report if the suspect had used a pistol in the brawl. However the police failed to submit a report called for by court.

A constable of the Wadduwa police told court that the certified copies of statements made by the complainant and the evidence recorded was forwarded to the ASP who was now investigating the alleged alterations. (K.S.Fernando)
