The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) has lost around Rs.6 billion annually due to the piracy of electricity mainly in certain areas of the eastern province, Minister Paatali Champika Ranawaka said today.

The Power and Energy Minister said that the CEB would not be lenient in taking action against those pirating electricity.

“This is an amount equivalent to the annual allocation for the Samurdhi Scheme. Piracy of electricity is done mostly in the eastern province,” he said.

He said that 14 per cent of electricity generated by the CEB was pirated in the past, and it had been reduced to 13 per cent. (Kelum Bandara and Yohan Perera)
