The Private Bus Operators' Association confirmed today that they will be taking legal action against the Transport Ministry’s decision to not raise bus fares.
Two weeks ago the association demanded for a two percent increase in fares from the ministry. “We are requesting for an increase in bus fares because the ministry has not provided adequate timetables for the bus routes. This has increased the vehicle congestion on the roads and as a result fuel consumption is also high. Therefore the increment is very much needed,” the association’s President, Gemunu Wijeyratne said today.

Transport Minister Kumara Welgama told the Daily Mirror recently that bus fares will not be increased under any conditions. “Despite whatever measures that the private bus owners want to make, CTB bus fare rates will remain the same,” he said. (OJ)
