Party leaders to decide on PSC

The party leaders will meet during the budget debate to decide on the setting up of the Parliamentary Select Committee (PSC) to resolve the North–East conflict, a senior official said today.

Parliament Secretary General Dhammika Kitulgoda said it was imperative for the party leaders to decide on the fate of the PSC as it had been included in the Order Paper.

“It is up to the party leaders to decide on the next course of action on the PSC,” he said.

The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) said today that the government and the TNA had agreed to submit a report to the PSC on a consensual set of proposals at the end of the two-party talks.

“The TNA and the government will hold their next round of talks on Wednesday. We hope we can have several rounds of talks during the budget debate and come to an agreement which will be submitted to the PSC,” TNA parliamentarian M.A. Sumanthira said.

The PSC comprising 31 members will be appointed by Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa after party leaders decide whether to debate the matter or appoint the committee, a government source said. (By Sandun A. Jayasekera)
