Sri Lanka navy yesterday salvaged at least six parts of the wreckage of the Lion Air passenger aircraft, which crashed into the Iranathivu seas in 1998.

The Navy said that it is conducting the salvage operation in the presence of the Terrorist Investigation Division officials.

They said that a team of 80 divers and two landing craft are engaged in the salvaging operation, which will continue today as well, a navy official said.

On September 29, 1998 air craft AN 24 carrying 48 civilians with eight crew including two Ukrainian pilots went missing. Later it was found that the air craft crashed into the Northern seas off Iranatheevu.
