Participate in special convention – JVP tells Dissidents

The JVP today challenged its dissidents to participate in the party’s special convention scheduled for January 1 at the Debarawewa Public Stadium in Tissamaharama, Hambantota and prove its strength if possible.

The JVP called for this convention in the backdrop of a group of central committee members breaking ranks with the party and forming a new political movement. Already, nine members out of the 23 member central committee have defected.

Asked for a comment about the new convention, the party’s General Secretary Tilvin Silva threw this challenge at the dissidents.

“These factionalists have been crowing over for the past few months saying that they have the majority support in the party. Now, they can come and prove their strength instead of shouting here and there,” he said.

Mr. Silva said that all the dissident members were invited for the convention.

“We have followed the proper procedure in this case. Also, we put up a newspaper advertisement,” he said.

However, dissident member G. Kularatne, said that he is not in a position to comment on the convention.

“Some of us have been invited.  We will decide on it later,” he said. (Kelum Bandara)
