The voter turn out at the Nawalapitiya and Kumburupitiya electorates has ended satisfactorily with over 50% casting their votes in Nawalapitiya and 46% casting their votes in Kumburupitiya, election monitors said.

PAFFREL Executive Director, Rohana Hettiarachchi told Daily Mirror online that the polls ended peacefully with no major incidents reported in both electorates.

He said tight security had been maintained throughout the day and voters were able to cast their votes freely especially because of the presence of senior officials from the elections department, senior officials from the police and the STF deployed in and around the polling booths.

“We are quite satisfied with the way the voting ended. It was quite peaceful throughout the day. Luckily this time there were no serious violations,” Hettiarachchi said.

Election monitors present in Nawalapitiya told Daily Mirror online that they had held discussions with the police soon after voting ended in order to discuss the events of the day. The transportation of ballot boxes to the counting centers also took place amidst tight security.
