Over 100 Lankans arrested off Trinco

An Australia bound trawler with 109 passengers onboard, including eight sinhalese, were taken into custody off the Trincomalee coast, by the Navy.

They were arrested by a Navy patrol vessel deployed by the Eastern Naval Command. Accordingly, the detection has been made yesterday afternoon and the fishing trawler was brought to the Trincomalee Harbour last night and the group was already handed over to the CID for further investigations.

On July 13, another Australia bound trawler with 41 passengers onboard was taken into custody 15 Nautical Miles off the Trincomalee coast, by the Navy. They were from Vakarai, Trincomalee, Sampur, Chilaw and Negombo.

A police constable and 15 Governmant servants were among those arrested in Kalkuda while trying to sail to Australia illegally Police said.
