Opposition attacked at Hambantota protest

Several UNP local government members, including Opposition Leader of the Hambantota Municipal Council Auyb Khan were attacked by a gang at protest campaign held at the Hambantota bus halt this morning.


The protest campaign ‘Viyaruwata Erehi Veediye Wirodhay’ organized by civil society member Jayathilake Bandara was wounded along with others who were injured during the attack were admitted to the Hambantota and Ambalantota hospitals.   


Protestors said Hambantota Mayor Eraj Fernando and a gang of individuals had attacked the peaceful street protest.

 

Opposition leader Khan who is admitted at the Hambantota General Hospital said the Police had watched as the protesters were beaten with helmets and sticks by the Mayor and his gang. “The Mayor and some of the individuals had weapons in their hands that they threatened us with,” he said.  

 

Sources said Bandara wanted to transfer to a more secure hospital after treatment and was in a secure facility at the moment as he feared for his life.   

 

Meanwhile, parliamentarian Mangala Samaraweere who was at a media briefing in Matara when the attack occurred said he had called DIG for the Southern Province to complain about the incident.(Krishan Jeewaka Jayaruk)
