The police had to use tear gas today to disperse a crowd that had staged a protest and were stoning the Pottuvil Police Station demanding the release of four persons. The arrests had been made following an assault the previous night on Army Officials engaged in elephant census duties.

Police deployed additional squads to quell the protesters and one person was shot dead, sources at the Pottuvil Hospital said.

The victim has been identified as Mohammed Mahjoon of Pottuvil. He is the father of two children. (By Sanath Desmond)
