NWP and CP Provincial Council to be dissolved

Governors of the North-Western Province and Central Province Tissa R. Balalle and Tikiri Kobbekaduwa confirmed that the two provinces would be dissolved effective from 12.00 midnight today.

The official gazette notifications dissolving the two provinces one year prematurely at the request of the two Chief Ministers, Sarath Ekanayake of the Central Province and Athula Wijesinha of the North-Western will be issued this afternoon, they said.

Meanwhile, the Presidential Secretariat spokesman said the decree by President Mahinda Rajapaksa instructing Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya to conduct polls in the Northern Province was issued this morning.

Accordingly, the PC polls for the three provinces are expected to be held in the latter part of September. (SAJ)
