The second stage of the Norochcholai coal power plant, which contributes 300 megawatts  to the national grid, was inoperative this evening due to a technical fault, a spokesman for the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) said.

The first stage of the Norochcholai coal power plant had also broken down about a week ago, he said.

He said it would take a few days to repair the power plant and that CEB has to purchase electricity from the private sector to make up the loss of 600 megawatts to the national grid caused by the breakdown.
