UNP parliamentarian Eran Wickramaratne rejected claims made by the UPFA that the clashes among its candidates were to maintain the enthusiasm during the upcoming election because the opposition was too weak to politically challenge the UPFA.

He said the UPFA’s intra-party clashes were because it had nominated the kith and kin of ruling party politicians as its candidates.

Responding to a question on the shifting of the controversial Rathupaswala factory to Biyagama, Mr. Wickramaratne said such a move was not the solution to the crisis because other factories too could contaminate the ground water.

He said the government into pollution outside the free trade zone as well.

“Countries such as China had spent US$150 million to clean its environment and Sri Lanka should also focus on cleaning its environment,” he said. (Yohan Perera & Ajith Siriwardana)
