No warning board or red light, lorry pays price

A container lorry transporting a consignment of tiles ran off the road at the Massala Junction in Beruwala on the Colombo-Galle road and toppled. Inquiries revealed that the driver had lost control of the vehicle that fell into a pit dug by workers attending to some water supply maintenance work.

The stock of tiles had been damaged and rendered useless. However the driver and others travelling in the tipper were not hurt in the incident.

Residents of the area accused the officials responsible for the maintenance of the water supply project for creating death traps in this manner.

They pointed out that unprotected pits had been left at several places along the road.

They requested the police to take action against the individuals responsible for not filling the pits and failing to place a board with a red light cautioning drivers of the obstruction. (Sarath Siriwardene and Kirthiwansa Tilakaratne)
