No legal action on radioactive contamination

The Sri Lanka Atomic Energy Authority (SLAEA) said legal action will not be taken against the Indian company that imported radioactive contaminated products to Sri Lanka. SLAEA Senior Deputy Director Anil Ranjith speaking to Daily Mirror said there were no grounds to resort to legal action, since the contamination had not been a deliberate action.

“Radioactive contamination can take place if the steel sheets were exposed to a radioactive energy source for a prolonged period. We believe the producers might have used such radioactive contaminated sheets accidentally for the products,” Mr. Ranjith said.

However, he added the contaminated products reflected the poor standards followed by the company in question.

 The consignment of stainless steel and aluminium products contaminated with an artificial radioactive element - cobalt 60, was detected at the Colombo harbour last week. The release and distribution of the contaminated products were halted with immediate effect. (Lakna Paranamanna)
