Police spokesman Prishantha Jayakody said today there was no political pressure on the investigations into the Kahawatte killings and that all suspects alleged to have been involved in the 13 killings have been arrested and produced in the courts.

“We have completely restored law and order in the area and there is no reason to panic about security. We have set up a police post in the area with 37 police personnel and an STF post with 70 personnel who function round the clock,” he said.

Commenting on the transfer of the Kahawatte OIC Niranjan Abewardhana, SSP Jayakody said two incidents had occurred even after his appointment and we wanted someone who can solve these crimes immediately.

Following a request by the residents and on the instructions of the IGP, Inspector Abeywardene’s transfer was cancelled and reappointed as Kahawatte OIC.

Minister John Senaviratne said every effort has been made to restore law and order in the area and to arrest all the suspects involved in these crimes except those in the last two killings. No one can say that we did not carry out our duties or had disrupted the investigations “

Responding to a question raised by a journalist whether there were any drugs behind these incidents he strongly denied any drug involvement and said there were no drugs in Kahawatte and it was a baseless story reported in the media to insult him.(Ajith Siriwardana)
