The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) today said there have been no discussions yet regarding the impending Presidential Election within the alliance.

TNA spokesperson and MP Suresh Premachandra told the Daily Mirror said that the party leaders were yet to decide on the alliance’s stance if a presidential election is declared.

“There has been no discussion within the TNA yet regarding this. However, what we will be interested is in the policies that the candidates are going to propose. There are burning issues in the North and East which include the occupation of land by the Army, resettlement and resolving of the Tamil national problem. We will be inclined to support any candidate who will align with these causes” he said.

When questioned as to the proposal of a common opposition candidate, Premachandran was non-committal.

“We must first comprehend if there is a chance for a common candidate and if so who the candidate is going to be. These are issues that we are yet to discuss,” he said.

The TNA controls the Northern Provincial Council which is the only Provincial Council not governed by the ruling UPFA.

During the last presidential election, the TNA supported the common opposition candidate former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka. (Hafeel Farisz)
