No delays of child abuse cases

Cases relating to child abuse are to receive priority among court cases and a new project by the Justice Ministry aims at expediting such cases and dispensing them within one year of the date of complaint.

Justice Ministry Secretary Suhada Gamlath said the judiciary is more worried about the laws being delayed and about the long legal process relating to child abuse cases in particular.

“The damage caused to child victims is much serious when the delivery of judgments relating to child abuse cases gets delayed. Therefore, our intention is to finalise cases relating to child abuse in one year,” Mr. Gamlath told the Daily Mirror today. (Sandun A. Jayasekara)
