Former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka would have to serve the full prison term of 30 months passed on him by the Military Tribunal (MT) as his sentence did not come under the category that entitles amnesties or parole, a senior official of Rehabilitation and Prison Reforms said yesterday.

Accordingly, he would be released on April 30, 2013 after serving the full prison term of two and a half years served on him by the MT that started on November 1st, 2010, Rehabilitation and Prison Reforms Ministry Secretary A. Dissanayaka said.

Mr. Fonseka is not entitled to amnesties or the parole as he does not fall under about 25 categories that considered prison pardons and amnesties as he had been tried under the Military Act, he said.

Mr. Dissanayaka said the period which Mr. Fonseka was under detention before his sentencing by the MT would not count when his prison term was calculated.
