Indian Coast Guard (ICG) personnel of Kakinada caught nine Sri Lankan fishermen who entered into Indian sea waters for illegally fishing on Saturday and handed them over to the marine police on Sunday. They were caught with nearly 3,500 kilos of fish on board and the two boats were seized.

According to sources, when the ICGS Sarang, an advanced offshore patrol vessel was engaged in routine patrol mission, the two Sri Lankan fishing boats, Gulf Star Marina and Champa with nine fishermen who had sailed from Trincomalee in Sri Lanka were apprehended off the Nizampatnam coast.

“The apprehension is a result of continued and extensive surveillance of the ICG,” ICG officials said. They said that this was the eighth apprehension of Lankan fishing vessels by the CG in this region this year. Marine police station CI Mr. Y.R.K. Srinivas registered a case and is investigating.
