The government should reduce the price of milk powder as its price had dropped drastically in the global market, the National Freedom Front (NFF) said today.

“Milk powder prices have been decreased in the global market from 5,000 to 3,700 US dollars an MT today. The government should take action to reduce the milk powder prices just like it was so keen on increasing the prices locally when the prices were increased globally,” NFF Spokesman Mohammed Muzammil told a news conference.

He charged the authorities had given tax relieves to the milk powder companies by lowering the Cess Tax by Rs. 57.

“Authorities should increase the Cess Tax to give relief to the local farmers at least now,” he said.

He said the authorities had given Rs. 5,000 million to milk powder companies by reducing the Cess Tax.

He said the latest price hike given to the milk powder companies to increase one kilo of milk powder packet price by Rs. 152 should be reduced to give compensation to the customers. (Sanath Desmond and Lahiru Pothmulla)
