The United National Party (UNP) which celebrated its 67th anniversary today said this would be the last anniversary celebrated as the opposition and that the party would be commemorating its 68th anniversary as the Sri Lankan Government.

“This is the last anniversary we are celebrating as the opposition. The UNP will pave the way for a general election to take place in 2014 and we will win it. We will celebrate our 68th anniversary under a UNP government,” UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe said.

The celebrations were held at its headquarters ‘Sirikotha’. Under the instruction of Mr. Wickremesinge the National Youth Front (NYF) had organized the celebrations giving prominence to Sri Lanka’s younger generation. He accused the government of killing innocent youngsters in the country.

“Those who died in the Katunayake and Weliweriya incidents were innocent youngsters. A Government should safeguard every citizen including youngsters without putting their lives at risk,” Mr. Wickremesinghe said.
He said it was the UNP government that introduced the internet facility, free education and health services to the country giving attention to the younger generation.

“If youngsters want to live in a free and youth-friendly country they should come and join the UNP. We will take to the streets and protest demanding a general election by the end of this year. Victory will be the only option for the UNP,” Mr. Wickremesinghe said. (Lahiru Pothmulla)
