The government today said it has decided to reduce the registration fee of news websites by 75 percent, and the renewal fee by 80 percent.

Media Spokesman Minister Keheliya Rambukwella said the Cabinet had given the approval for the proposal to reduce the registration and the annual renewal fee of websites to Rs 25,000 and 10,000 respectively.

On July 31, the government stated that the Cabinet had approved a proposal to levy a registration fee of LKR (Sri Lanka rupees) 100,000 (approximately USD 750) on websites that carry news and current affairs content on the country. These websites would moreover be liable to pay an annual renewal fee of LKR 50,000 (approximately USD 375).
